The Blondes by Emily Schultz
Hazel Hayes is a grad student living in NYC. She had an affair with her married professor and now has an unwanted pregnancy, but that’s really the least of her troubles. She is witnessing an odd and frightening situation; natural and bleach-blonde women worldwide are being taken down with a terrible rabies-like affliction that they’re transmitting amongst themselves. No one knows the origin of the disease, but they need to figure something out fast because it’s causing the blondes to act with extreme violence towards anyone near them. Even women with hair that’s close to blonde, including redheads, are being harassed and interned by their governments. With The Blondes, Emily Schultz offers an interesting commentary on discrimination, playing on the fears that lurk within us.
