What do librarians read?

By MPL Staff on Dec 13, 2014 3:24 PM

They're surrounded by books all day...so what do they check out? Here's a selection of fiction from our branch librarians.

Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes

Detective Gabriella Versado of the Detroit Police Department hunts a serial killer with a penchant for mutilating corpses while her teenage daughter is using the internet to play a dangerous game of her own. Recommended for fans of Stephen King and James Patterson, Beukes, a native of South Africa, is an author to watch. Beth @ East

City of Stairs by Robert Jackson Bennett

In this first book in a new series from fantasy author Robert Jackson Bennett, the richly imagined city of Bulikov is practically a character itself. Previously protected by now-dead divine beings, Bulikov has crumbled to a shell of its former powerful self, where it is illegal to delve into the city's mysterious past. Into this bleak ruin steps Shara Divani, one of the country's most accomplished spies. Sent to Bulikov to investigate the murder of a historian who had been spreading the secret, forbidden history of the city, what she discovers is a larger plot in which the city's former protectors may not be as absent as they seem. Jessie @ Villard Square

Casebook by Mona Simpson

Miles wants to find out what is happening with his parents so he begins to snoop, eavesdrop and spy on his mother along with his best friend Hector. His parents do divorce and his mother starts to date a man who he comes to like but does not thoroughly trust. What he finds out may be too much for him to handle and yet he cannot stop. The reader cannot help but fall in love with Miles and his family. Publisher’s Weekly correctly states that the story stays with you long after you turn the last page. Enid @ Mill Road & Capitol

Next Life Might Be Kinder by Howard Norman

Sam and Elizabeth are young newlyweds exploring all of life’s possibilities. After Elizabeth’s sudden murder, Sam is forced to explore all of grief’s possibilities. In his shock and desolation he moves to a seaside cottage where he is delighted to discover that in the evenings he can visit with his dead wife as she arranges books on the beach. Howard Norman’s intriguing novel explores our bond with the past and the astonishing power of human connection. Tricia @ Mill Road

Booty Bones by Carolyn Haines

PI Sarah Booth Delaney is on vacation with her fiancé, film actor, Graf Milieu. They’ve come to Dauphin Island, Alabama to work on wedding plans while he recovers from a gunshot wound to his leg. Preoccupied with his physical therapy, Graf becomes emotionally distant to Sarah. Angela Trotter asks Sarah to investigate her father’s cruel murder. Angela believes the wrong man is serving a life sentence for the crime. Can Sarah find out who really killed Angela’s father?  Will she be able to reconnect with Graf? The answers can be found in this 14th Sarah Booth Delaney mystery! Tricia @ Mill Road

Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris

Fans of the Sookie Stackhouse series will enjoy this first book in a planned trilogy by the prolific author. The few residents of Midnight, Texas have all chosen this dilapidated small town for its size and its quietness. The townspeople include a witch, a reverend, a vampire, a new psychic in town, and other seemingly normal friends. Aubrey, the girlfriend of the local pawn shop owner is found murdered. They join forces to solve her murder. It is an enjoyable mystery/romance with a dash of the paranormal. Amy @ Mill Road
