MPL Branch History: Bay View

The beginning of Bay View Library is attributed to Beulah Brinton who welcomed the community into her personal lending library in the 1870s. The current branch opened in 1993 in the wedge-shaped site at 2566 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. The building is characterized by a curved roof and expansive windows, allowing ample natural light to illuminate the collections and spaces. Read more about it!

1950 Census Goes Live

The National Archives released 1950 Census Schedules on April 1, 2022. The census includes an artificial intelligence/optical character recognition name index that helps researchers find free genealogical information on family members and famous people. This information is kept confidential for 72 years following each decennial census.

Dr. James Cameron Pamphlet Collection

The grand re-opening of America's Black Holocaust Museum (ABHM) on February 25, 2022, coincides with the birthday anniversary of Dr. James Cameron, who founded ABHM in 1988. Dr. Cameron was the only known survivor of a lynching that took place in 1930 in Marion, Indiana. Learn more about him and his pamphlet collection housed at the Milwaukee Public Library.

MPL Branch History: Washington Park

The first Milwaukee Public Library to serve the Washington Park neighborhood opened in 1911, located at the pre-1930 address of 3414 W. Lisbon Ave. In 2003, the new Washington Park Library opened across from Washington Park. The site is at the crossroads of the bustling Sherman and Lisbon intersection and employs a commanding presence in the neighborhood.

MPL Branch History: Martin Luther King

Preceded by several branches on Milwaukee's north side, the Martin Luther King Branch, originally named the Locust Library, opened in 1971. The Locust Library was renamed the Martin Luther King Library in 1973. In 2014, MPL began the process of replacing the dated M.L. King Branch. Moody Nolan has been selected to design the new library, which holds an expected completion in 2023.
